The UK 100 called to open +18 points at 8,335. UK 100 is set to open higher on Wednesday setting new record highs, while New York equities closed mixed overnight and Asian stocks trended lower amid a lack of macro catalysts. Solid earnings and revived hopes that interest rate cuts may still be on the table in 2024 have pushed equity markets higher. The Dow closed +0.1%, S&P +0.1% and Nasdaq -0.1%. In Asia the Nikkei closed -1.5%, Shanghai -0.3% and Hong Kong -0.5%.
AstraZeneca has initiated the worldwide withdrawal of its COVID-19 vaccine due to a “surplus of available vaccines” since the pandemic.
Boohoo reported a 7% fall in annual core earnings, in line with guidance after revenue dropped 17%. Their EBITDA came in at £58.6m in the year to end of Feb 2024, at the bottom end of guidance of £58-70m, but up on the £63.3m made in 2022/23.
Direct Line Insurance Group have reported that their Q1 2024 gross written premium and associated fees are up 15%.
JD Wetherspoon have forecast their profit to be towards the upper end of market expectations after they posted higher Q3 sales, aided by strong demand for its traditional ales and vodka. They reported a 5.2% rise in like-for-like sales for the 13 weeks to April 28th.
Renishaw says their pretax profit in 9 months to March 31st was £86.8m, down from £111.8m YoY as they state they continue to deliver solid performance in mixed market conditions. They expect the recent improvement in trading performance to strengthen in the remainder of the year. They expect their adjusted pretax profit to be in the range of £122-135m.
