Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -13 point at 7,548. The UK 100 is expected to open modestly lower today, having fallen heavily on Wednesday with all eyes on the interest rate decision by the Bank of England at midday.  The BoE is expected to hike rates by another 25 basis points to 5.25%, a more modest increase than the larger 50bps raise at its last meeting.  On Wednesday, US markets fell sharply in the wake of the credit ratings downgrade by Fitch while today markets in Asia were mixed.  In Asia, the Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo was down 1.2%. In China, the Shanghai Composite was up 0.4%, while the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong was up 0.3%.

 

 

Company News & Broker Comments:

Company News:

London Stock Exchange Group reported H1 total income of £4.179bn, +11.9% YoY, saying that their revenue growth for the year is expected to be near the top end of guidance.

 

 

Next have raised their guidance for annual profit by £10m to £845m, after full prices sales came in better than expected as they enjoyed a strong end-of-season summer sale.

 

 

Pets at Home report that their FY guidance remains unchanged as they are comfortable with market expectations.

 

 

Rolls-Royce reported an underlying H1 operating profit of £673m, more than five times the level of a year ago, led by large improvement in its civil aerospace margin. They have upgraded their FY profit last month to £1.2-1.4bn up from its previous guidance of £800m-1bn.

 

 

Smith & Nephew report a H1 pretax profit of $211m, up from $204m YoY. They have increased their FY underlying revenue growth guidance to between 6-7%. Their CFO Anne-Francoise Nesmes will step down in Q2 of 2024.

 

 

Wizz Air reported an operating profit of 79.9m euros for Q1 as well as higher revenues as it continues to benefit from strong travel demand across the airlines sector.
