Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +42 points at 7,571.   The UK 100 is expected to open higher after positive economic data sent US stocks higher.  Sentiment may also be boosted by news consumer confidence in the UK has reached its highest level in two years, according to GfK.  The S&P rose for a sixth straight day, overcoming a slump in Tesla as data indicated continued economic growth.  The broad index rose 0.53% to 4,894.16, clinching another all-time closing record. The Dow Jones added 242.74 points, or 0.64%, to 38,049.13. The Nasdaq increased by just 0.18% to 15,510.50, weighed down by a post-earnings tumble in Tesla shares.

Company News:

BHP Group notes reports about Brazil court decision on $32bn prosecution office claim relating to failure of Fundoo tailings dam in Brazil. Reports say BHP and partners are to pay $9.7bn in damages, but they state that they have not been served a decision by the court. The provision related to dam failure that BHP have set aside in their results last June was $3.7bn.

 

Paragon Banking have reconfirmed their FY guidance. Their trading was in in-line with board’s expectations for Q1 2023/24 as they reiterate their FY guidance.

 

WH Smith reported an 8% rise in total revenues for the 20 week period to Jan 20th, benefiting from resilient travel demand. The upswing in footfall at train stations and in airports has brought brisk business with Travel UK posting a revenue increase of 15% for the period.

 

Wickes Group report that they expect their annual profit to be at the upper end of market expectations, as they kept a tight lid on costs and saw strong demand in categories like flooring and decorating. Analysts expect an adjusted pretax profit in the range of £44.9-48.3m for the FY.
