Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -7 points at 7,367.  The UK 100 looks set to open slightly lower this morning, ahead of unemployment data and a raft of PMI readings today.  US bond yields fell in the US yesterday after US billionaire investor Bill Ackaman said he had ended his short call on US Treasuries saying “there is too much risk in the world to remain short bonds at current long-term rates’.  The fall boosted technology shares in the US although blue-chips fell further.  On Wall Street yesterday the Dow Jones slipped 190.87 points, or 0.58%, to close at 32,936.41, while the S&P fell 0.17% to end the session at 4,217.04. The best performing index was the tech-heavy Nasdaq which added 0.27% to finish the session at 13,018.33.

Company News & Broker Comments:

Company News:

Anglo American posted mixed production results for Q3 with copper up 42%, underpinned by the ramp-up of its Quellaveco mine and a double-digit decrease in steelmaking coal and diamonds output.

Barclays have reported that their profit for Q3 dipped slightly YoY, nonetheless beating expectations as strong performance in its consumer and credit cards business offset sliding revenues in its investment bank. They reported a pretax profit of £1.9bn, down from £2bn YoY and above analyst forecasts of £1.77bn. They are evaluating actions to reduce structural costs which may result in material additional charges in Q4.

Bunzl posted a 4.8% fall in Q3 revenue due to reduced benefits from cost inflation and waning COVID-related sales. They expect their FY revenue to be slightly lower than 2022 at constant exchange rates.

Softcat reports a FY gross profit of £373.8m and a FY operating profit of £140.9m as they expect their double-digit gross profit growth to continue.
