Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -2 points at 7,690. UK 100 is set to open flat on Friday, continuing to miss out on AI-driven gains seen in equity markets across the globe. Yesterday Wall Street rallied with the Dow closing +1.2%, S&P +2.1% (both notching new record highs) and the Nasdaq +3%, closing just shy of its all-time high. In Asia on Friday the Nikkei closed +2.2%, Shanghai +0.6% and Hang Seng +0.1%.

Smith & Nephew CFO Anne-Francoise Nesmes is to join Sanofi’s board on April 30th.

 

Standard Chartered reported that their 2023 pretax profit rose 18%, in line with forecasts, and rewarded shareholders with a $1bn share buyback. Their statutory pretax profit for 2023 came in at $5.09bn, in line with $5.1bn expected by average analyst estimates. They took a $850m impairment from its stake in Chinese lender Bohai Bank, its second time writing down the value of the unit as the lender was hit by increasing bad loans as growth in China slowed. They expect their income to grow 5-7% between 2024 and 2026.
