The UK 100 called to open +12 points at 8,549. The UK 100 looks set to open marginally higher this morning, having closed at a third consecutive all time high yesterday.
Stocks advanced on Tuesday in the US as Wall Street viewed President Donald Trump’s comments and first-day actions around international trade as a bit softer than initially believed. The Dow Jones added 537.98 points, or 1.24%, to finish at 44,025.81. The S&P gained 0.88% to end at 6,049.24, while the Nasdaq rose 0.64% to 19,756.78.
Asian stocks were mixed on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest comments on tariffs raised uncertainty in Chinese markets. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng dropped 1.1% to 19,888.12, while the Shanghai Composite lost 0.7% to 3,805.78. In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index was up 1.5% at 39,604.71 after Trump announced a joint venture that aims to invest up to $500 billion in infrastructure related to artificial intelligence. Softbank Group Corp.’s Japan-listed shares surged 8.9% on Wednesday.
Easyjet reported a smaller operating loss in its first quarter on Wednesday on easing fuel costs and strong passenger demand for travel and its holiday packages. Operating loss came in at 40 million pounds ($49.27 million) for the three months to Dec. 31, compared with 117 million pounds a year earlier. Easyjet said current booking trends were supportive of it meeting market expectations for pretax profit of 709 million pounds in fiscal 2025, according to a company-compiled consensus.
JD Wetherspoons reported this morning for the period the company reported like-for-like sales growth of 5.1 per cent, with bar sales up 4.5 per cent and food sales up by 5.6 per cent. However, hotel sales slumped by 6.5 per cent. Like-for-like sales for the main Christmas period, the three weeks from 16 December 2024 to 5th January 2025, grew 6.1 per cent. Over the first six months of the company’s financial year, it opened two new pubs and sold six.
