Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +21 points at 7,684.  The UK 100 looks set to open higher this morning, following on from a bounce on Wall Street yesterday, which saw both the S&P and Dow Jones both clambered out of the red just before the closing bell, both up 0.13%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq was unable to get its head back above water, finishing 0.32% lower. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei has set a new all-time closing high, beating a record set 34 years ago, with tech stocks leading the way after a boost from NVIDIA Inc earnings after the New York closing bell.

Company News & Broker Comments:

Company News:

Anglo American’s FY profit plunged 94%, hit by weak prices and higher costs at its diamond, platinum and iron ore businesses. They have taken a $1.6bn impairment charge on its De Beers diamond business owing to faltering demand.

Hargreaves Lansdown report a H1 FY24 pretax profit of £182.5m, down from £197.6m YoY. They have increased their dividend by 4% to 13.2p, up from 12.7p YoY.

Hays report that their HY net fees were £583.3m, down from £651.9m YoY.

Lloyds reported a 57% jump in their annual profit for FY 2023 to £7.5bn, up from £4.8bn YoY and slightly above the £7.4bn average of analyst forecasts compiled by the bank. They have set aside £450m for the motor finance review being carried out by the FCA into commission arrangements on car financing. They announced a final dividend of 1.84p and a share buyback of £2bn.

Mondi reports a 2023 pretax profit of 682m euros, down from 1.56bn euros YoY. They expect their projects to deliver meaningful EBITDA contribution from 2025, as they are well positioned to capitalise as demand improves.

Rolls-Royce have reported that their annual profit more than doubled last year, beating consensus. They reported a FY operating profit of £1,944m. They have forecast a further jump in their profits this year as aircrafts powered by its engines fly more, its power business improves and defence orders continue to flow.

WPP state that their Like-for-Like revenue less pass-through costs rose 0.3% in the final quarter, as weak spending by US tech, healthcare and retail clients held back growth in Britain and India.
