Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +16 points at 8,189. The UK 100 looks set to start the first trading session of 2025 on the front foot, continuing on from Tuesdays strong showing which saw the UK’s blue chip index rise 0.6%.

Data out this morning showed house prices ended 2024 on a strong footing after building society Nationwide recorded a rise of 0.7% in December.

Asia markets have fallen sharply during the first trading session of the year.  Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index is down 2% and the Shanghai Composite 2.8% lower after China’s Caixin manufacturing PMI figure for December came in below expectations at 50.5.

Vodafone Group announces it has completed the sale of its Italian operations to Swisscom AG for €8.0 billion in cash.  Proceeds from this sale will be used to reduce Vodafone Group net debt and the Board will target to return to shareholders up to €2.0 billion, as already expressed in the announcement of the transaction dated 15 March 2024, once the current buyback programme has completed.

 

John Wood Group has completed the sale of its stake in Ethos Energy Group Limited, a joint venture focused on rotating equipment.  Wood has completed the sale to One Equity Partners for a final net cash consideration of $138 million, with $42 million of prior planned loan notes replaced by an additional cash consideration at completion.
