Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +60 points at 8,250. UK 100 is set to open higher on Thursday after Fed Reserve Governor Christopher Waller said they are “getting closer” to lowering interest rates amid growing signs that inflation is easing, though the job is not done yet. Later today we have the key ECB interest rate decision at 1:15pm where rates are expected to be held at 4.25%. Additionally President Biden has tested positive for COVID and said he would consider dropping his re-election bid if diagnosed with a serious medical condition. It was a mixed session in the US yesterday with the Dow closing +0.6%, S&P -1.4% and Nasdaq -2.8%. In Asia Tokyo closed -2.2%, Shanghai +0.2% and Hong Kong +0.5%.

 

 

Company News & Broker Comments:

Company News:

AJ Bell reported a 20% rise in Q3 assets under administration (AUA) on the back of a revival in investor sentiment. They posted AUA of £83.7bn for the quarter ended June 30th up from £69.8bn last year.

 

Anglo American state that their copper output was almost flat in H1, while it curbed its output forecast for coking coal, combined woes that are likely to weigh on its earnings. Copper output was +2% YoY, while they lowered their yearly guidance for steelmaking coal to a range of 14-15.5m metric tons from 15-17m previously.

 

Darktrace report that their annual recurring revenue at FY-end was $782.2m, up 23% YoY.

 

Diploma reports Q3 revenue growth of 13% YTD.

 

Dunelm have forecast for their annual profit to be slightly higher than market consensus, helped by an increase in volumes as customers spent on new furnishings to spruce up their homes. Profit before tax for the year ended June 29th will likely be slightly ahead of analysts expectations of £200m.

 

Frasers reported a 13.1% rise in FY profit, benefiting from its plan to diversify and shift the group upmarket. They made an adjusted pretax profit of £544.8m the year to April 28th, at the top end of its guidance range of £500-550m and up from £478m made in 2022/23.

 

International Distribution Services reported an 8.2% rise in revenue for Q1 2025, supported by strong parcel demand and more postal votes during the UK elections. They have maintained their outlook for a return to profit this fiscal year.

 

SSE reports that their Q1 operational performance was in line with expectations.
