Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -12 points at 7,805.  The UK bluechip index looks set to open lower once, data out this morning showed Inflation has eased to 3.2% down from 3.4%, official figures from the Office for National Statistics show, the lowest level since 2021, raising hopes for the Bank of England may start cutting interest rates sooner rather than later.  Stateside yesterday saw the S&P slip after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said interest rates may need to stay elevated.  The broad index lost 0.21% to finish at 5,051.41, while the Nasdaq shed 0.12% to 15,865.25. The Dow Jones rose 63.86 points, or 0.17%, to 37,798.97. The Dow snapped a six-day run of losses.

Anglo American’s cycle 3 rough diamond sales value comes in at $445m, down from $542m YoY. They note that the uncertain landscape and slow pace of growth in China has been affecting their business.

 

Antofagasta updated that their copper output fell 11% in Q1 2024 due to reduced ore grades at its Centinela operation. They produced 129,400 metric tons of copper during the period, down 32.4% from Q4 last year.

 

ASOS sunk to a H1 loss but have stuck to their annual guidance for an improvement, naming Dave Murray as their new CFO. They posted a HY pretax loss of £270m.

 

British American Tobacco & Imperial Brands: Rishi Sunak’s plan to ban anyone aged 15 and under from ever buying cigarettes passed its first parliamentary vote on Tuesday.

 

De La Rue says their FY24 adjusted operating profit is to be in line with previous expectations.

 

Entain reported a fall in Q1 online gaming revenue, hurt by stiff competition and regulatory pressures in its main markets. They stated that their online net gaming revenue was down 2% in Q1, while total group net gaming revenue was up 6%.

 

GSK notes that end-of-trial data shows 79.7% efficacy in some patients re Shingrix for Shingles.

 

Rio Tinto reported a 5% fall in Q1 iron ore shipments, missing estimates because of weather disruptions at ports and reduced production from some of its Western Australian mines.

 

Saga reported a FY adjusted pretax profit of £38.2m.
