Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -5 points at 7,502.  The UK 100 is expected to open marginally lower on Tuesday after US markets rallied led by gains in tech stocks.  Figures out this morning showed a jump in the unemployment rate for April to June to 4.2% from 3.9% driven by the number of people unemployed for up to 6 months.  In a further sign the UK jobs market may be cooling the estimated number of vacancies between May and July fell by 66,000 on the quarter to 1,020,000. Vacancies fell on the quarter for the 13th consecutive period.  While wage growth was at record level – now almost on par with inflation.

British bookmaker 888 Holdings retained its forecast of higher full-year profit on Tuesday, as effective cost-cutting measures led to a 9% rise in first-half earnings.  The Gibraltar-headquartered company posted an adjusted core profit of 155.6 million pounds ($197.77 million), up from 142.5 million pounds a year ago.

 

 

Galliford Try has signed a multimillion-pound deal to build hundreds of flats in Cardiff.

 

 

Legal & General reported a robust first-half performance on Tuesday, as it made progress toward its five-year ambitions set for 2020-2024.  The FTSE 100 company reported an operating profit of £941m for the period, slightly below the £958m recorded in the first six months of 2022.  Alongside that, its Solvency II coverage ratio – a crucial metric for insurance companies indicating their financial health – stood at a solid 230%, showcasing a surplus of £9.2bn.  That was an improvement from the first half of 2022, when the ratio was 212%.  On the dividend front, Legal & General declared an interim distribution of 5.71p, making for a 5% increase from last year’s first-half dividend of 5.44p.

 

 

Marks and Spencer Group this morning said they expect interim results to beat previous expectations after strong growth in food and clothing sales.  Like-for-like food sales grew over 11% while like-for-like Clothing & Home sales grew over 6%, with strong growth in stores, and more subdued growth in online.
