Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -3 points at 7,570.  The UK 100 looks set to open marginally lower this morning, December’s unemployment data was released earlier, and it showed lower than expected unemployment at 3.8% compared to 4% predicted.  UK weekly wages saw a modest year-on-year increase of 5.8% to £669, marking the slowest growth in 17 months yet edging past predictions by a narrow margin.  The rise, albeit minimal, surpassed the anticipated 5.6% hike.  Stateside, The Dow Jones rose to a new high on Monday as investors awaited fresh inflation and earnings data.  The 30-stock index advanced 125.69 points, or 0.33%, to settle at 38,797.38. The S&P 500 inched lower by 0.09% to end at 5,021.84, while the Nasdaq slid 0.3% to close at 15,942.55.

TUI reported better than expected Q1 results, with an operating profit of 6m euros versus a loss of 153m euros last year, on the back of robust travel demand. They have maintained their outlook for a growth in operating profit of 25% in the 2024 financial year.
