Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +19 points at 8,225.  The UK 100 looks set to open higher this morning, GDP data out this morning showed UK economy showed no growth over the month in July after stalling in June, the latest data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed on Wednesday. The market forecast was for a 0.2% growth in the reported period.

The S&P posted a second winning session on Tuesday as Wall Street sought to find its footing in a turbulent September.  The broad market index added 0.45% to end at 5,495.52, and the Nasdaq gained 0.84%, closing at 17,025.88. The Dow Jones slipped 92.63 points, or 0.23%, settling at 40,736.96.

However U.S. stock futures slipped overnight and into this morning as investors assessed the presidential debate between Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris and looked toward the August consumer inflation report due Wednesday morning.

boohoo, announces changes to its operations in the US market as it seeks to broaden its product offering for US customers and expand its routes to market. The moves are the latest in a series of steps as part of the strategy to reposition the group for sustainable, profitable growth.  Under the changes, boohoo is to cease supplying US customers from its US distribution centre in Pennsylvania and will now fulfil all US orders from its state-of-the-art automated UK distribution centre in Sheffield.

 

Dunelm has posted what it is calling “strong” prelinary results for the year to June 29.  Revenues increased by 4.1% to just over £1.7bn, while profit before tax was up 6.6% to £205.4m.  Despite the encouraging performance, Dunelm said that it is operating in a “challenging consumer environment” with the timing of recovery “uncertain”.

 

GSK today announced that it has completed the primary objective data analysis from the phase II part of the TH HSV REC-003 trial. This trial is a combined phase I/II proof-of-concept study to assess potential clinical efficacy of GSK3943104, an early-stage therapeutic herpes simplex virus (HSV) vaccine candidate, before progressing it for further clinical development.  Results show that GSK3943104 did not meet the study’s primary efficacy objective. This vaccine candidate, therefore, will not progress to phase III studies.

 

Rightmove plc notes the announcement from REA Group Ltd (“REA”) and confirms that it received an unsolicited, non-binding and highly conditional proposal from REA regarding a possible cash and shares offer to acquire the entire issued and to be issued ordinary share capital of Rightmove.  The Proposal was 305 pence in cash and 0.0381 new REA shares for each Rightmove ordinary share. Based on the closing price of REA on 10 September 20241, this implies an offer value of 698p and a premium of 26% to the undisturbed closing share price of Rightmove as of 30 August 2024.

 

WH Smith today announced that they had ended the financial year in a strong position, delivering a performance in line with our expectations with good growth across our Travel businesses. The UK division performed particularly well over the peak summer trading period.  WH Smith are also today announcing the launch of a £50m share buyback.
