The UK 100 called to open -31 points at 8,249. The UK 100 looks set to open lower this morning, extending losses from yesterday,
Asian stocks were mixed on Wednesday, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong edged 0.1% lower to 20,294.54 and the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.2% at 3,430.25 as leaders convened an annual planning meeting in Beijing that is expected to set economic policies and growth targets for the coming year.
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 slipped 0.3% to 39,261.03 after data showed that Japan’s wholesale inflation in November rose 3.7% year-on-year, marking three consecutive months of increases and further adding pressure on the Bank of Japan to raise interest rates.
The S&P lost 0.3% to end at 6,034.91, and the Nasdaq dropped 0.25% to 19,687.24. Both indexes booked back-to-back losses. The Dow Jones declined for a fourth day, sliding 154.10 points, or 0.35%, to 44,247.83.
In focus today will be the US consumer price index data read, scheduled for release at 1.30pm GMT.
British American Tobacco on Wednesday forecast stronger revenue growth in its new category, which includes vapes and oral nicotine products, and combustibles in the second half of the year, driven by increased investments in the United States. The maker of Lucky Strike and Dunhill cigarettes said it remains on track to meet its 2024 outlook of low-single-digit organic revenue and adjusted profit growth.
