Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +11 points at 8,340.  The UK 100 looks set to extend yesterday’s gains into this mornings session ahead of the European Central Bank policy decision later.

Stateside the Dow rose to a record close on Wednesday, bouncing back from a sell-off in the previous session.  The blue-chip index gained 337.28 points, or 0.79%, and ended at 43,077.70. The S&P added 0.47% to 5,842.47, while the Nasdaq jumped 0.28% to close at 18,367.08.

Asian markets are mixed this morning, with Japan’s Nikkei and India’s Sensex down 0.5% and 0.4%, the Hang Seng up 0.4% in Hong Kong and the Shanghai Composite flat. The Asia Dow is up 0.3%.

That flatness in China might be something that holds back the FTSE, with copper prices down and likely to weight on London’s heavyweight miners

Company News:

Ibstock today reported a solid performance in their third-quarter trading update, maintaining expectations for full-year adjusted EBITDA. The company is strategically investing in sustainable production technologies, such as their carbon-neutral brick factory, to boost capacity and meet anticipated demand as the UK housing market shows signs of recovery. Despite recent market challenges, Ibstock remains well-positioned to capitalize on improving conditions within the construction sector.

Mondi said on Thursday trading conditions remained muted in the third quarter, after it reported a lower core profit compared with the previous three-month period, partly hurt by more planned maintenance shuts.

Rentokil Initial has reported a 3.6% growth in group revenue for Q3 2024, driven by a robust performance in Europe, the UK, and Asia. Despite challenges in North America, the company is implementing strategic initiatives, including new branches and pay plans, to boost growth and manage costs. The ongoing integration of Terminix is proceeding smoothly, with plans to review its effectiveness in early 2025.

St James’s Place saw net inflows of £890m during Q3 this year, according to its trading statement published today, remaining steady compared to £910m of net inflows over the same time frame last year.  While this represented a 25.8% fall compared to the previous quarter, when net inflows reached £1.2bn, year-to-date net inflows stood at 2.2% of assets under management, compared to 2.3% last quarter. Compared to the same time period last year, however, year-to-date inflows fell by 170 basis points from 3.9% to 2.2%.  Gross flows for Q3 came in at £4.4bn, compared to £3.7bn during Q3 2023 and £4.6bn during the previous quarter.
