Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -31 points at 8,280.  The UK 100 looks set to open slightly lower this morning, the drop comes off strong week for global markets last week as stocks rebounded from the Nikkei led drop in early August.

Asian markets saw a mixed showing overnight, with Shanghai just above the mark and Japan’s Nikkei 225 slightly off.

U.S. stocks rose on Friday as investors closed out the best week of 2024.  The S&P added 0.2% to 5,554.25, while the Nasdaq gained 0.21% to 17,631.72 on Friday. The Dow Jones rose 96 points, or 0.24%, to 40,659.76. For the week, the S&P 500 added nearly 3.9%, its best week since November 2023. The Nasdaq gained 5.2%, while the 30-stock Dow advanced 2.9% on the week.

BHP Group: workers at the world’s largest copper mine in Chile suspended a strike launched earlier last week and have restarted negotiations with BHP Group, the union and management.

 

Plus500 have forecast their annual results to be above the market view after they recorded a 13% jump in new customers for H1. Analysts expect the company to log annual revenue of $697.8m with a core profit of $314.6m according to company-compiled consensus.
