The UK 100 called to open +80 points at 8,088. The UK 100 looks set to rebound this morning, recovering some of yesterdays significant fall, part of a more global rout, which saw stocks across the world fall as concerns of a recession in the worlds largest economy grew. Having seen the largest fall since 1987 the Nikkei in Japan has recovered 10% this morning. Stocks fell sharply on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average posting its worst day in nearly two years. The Dow dropped 1,033.99 points, or 2.6%, to end at 38,703.27. The Nasdaq lost 3.43% and closed at 16,200.08, while the S&P 500 slid 3% to end at 5,186.33. The blue-chip Dow and S&P 500 registered their biggest daily losses since September 2022.
GSK PLC has successfully refuted claims that its discontinued heartburn drug Zantac caused cancer after an Illinois jury found that the product was not responsible for plaintiff Carrie Joiner’s colorectal cancer.
Abrdn has reported improved flows and progress on its cost-saving efforts as the fund manager gears up to appoint a new chief executive. The FTSE 250 asset management group, reported net inflows of £800m for the first half of 2024, marking a turnaround from £5.2bn of net outflows seen in the same period last year. Its assets under management and administration rose to £505.9bn from £494.9bn, which Abrdn pinned on “positive market movements and flows”. Abrdn posted an adjusted operating profit of £128m for the six months, compared to £127m a year before.
Building materials supplier Travis Perkins, cut its annual earnings guidance on Tuesday after reporting a 33% decline in first-half profit, weighed down by a subdued British construction sector. Companies linked to the health of the housing sector have been under pressure for more than a year as Britons delay home repair and improvement works in the face of broader economic woes. Travis Perkins forecast annual earnings of about 150 million pounds ($191.4 million), down from its previous projection in a range of 160 million to 180 million pounds.
InterContinental Hotels Group PLC reported an acceleration in revenue growth in the past quarter as improvement in North America helped offset worsening declines in China. The owner of the Holiday Inn, Crown Plaza and Kimpton hotel chains grew revenue per available room (revPAR) 3.0% in the first half of 2024, with 3.2% growth in the second quarter improving from a 2.6% reduction in the first. The Americas grew 3.3% in the second quarter after a 0.3% decline in the first, though US growth is lagging the rest of the continent; Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia softened to 6.3% from 8.9%, while China reversed to a 7% decline after growth of 2.5% in the first quarter.
