Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +43 points at 8,389.  The UK 100 looks set to open higher this morning ahead of the Bank of England interest rate decision later today.  Last night, the Federal Reserve said that a rate cut could be on the table at September’s meeting in comments that helped US markets to finish higher.  On Wall Street yesterday the S&P gained 1.58% to close at 5,522.30, while the Nasdaq jumped 2.64% to 17,599.40. It was the best session since February for both indexes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 99.46 points, or 0.24%, ending at 40,842.79.

Company News:

BAE Systems have upgraded their 2024 forecast boosted by strong operational performance and as it benefits from the acquisition of Ball aerospace earlier this year.

Barclays reported a lower than expected 9% fall in H1 profit as strong performance from its investment bank compensated for falling revenues elsewhere. They reported a H1 profit of £4.2bn, above the £3.8bn average of analysts’ forecasts and down from £4.6bn in the same period a year ago. They also plan to return at least £10bn of capital to shareholders between 2024-2026 through dividends and share buybacks.

Next have raised their FY profit outlook after reporting better-than-expected Q2 sales. Full price sales in Q2 rose 3.2%, ahead of guidance of a fall of 0.3%.

Rolls-Royce will restart dividends in their results for the FY after they raised their guidance for operating profit and free cash flow by as much as £300m after a strong H1. They have increased their forecast for 2024 underlying operating profit to between £2.1-2.3bn and free cash flow to between £2.1-2.2bn.

Schroders reported record assets under management of £773.7bn, but reported mixed results for H1 with subdued flows and pressure on its fees.

Shell reported a Q2 profit of $6.3bn a 19% drop for the previous quarter, but above forecasts as weaker refining and liquefied natural gas earnings weighed. Their dividend remained unchanged at 34 cents per share.

Wizz Air Holdings lowered their annual profit forecast after reporting a 44% drop in Q1 operating profit, partly due to costs related to Pratt & Witney’s engine troubles. They have forecast their net income for the year to be in the range of 350-450m euros, down from an earlier forecast of 500-600m euros.
