Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -28 points at 8,388.  The UK 100 looks set to open lower this morning, as UK inflation data cools slower than had been expected.  The CPI read showed inflation has dropped to 2.3%, down from 3.2% in March and is now just above the 2% target set by the Bank of England.  It hasn’t been this low since July 2021, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.  Core inflation to missed expectations, coming in at 3.9%, having been forecast at 3.6% however still also down from 4.2% in March.  Stateside yesterday saw the tech-heavy Nasdaq rise 0.22% to 16,832.62. The S&P added 0.25% to 5,321.41 and the Dow closed 0.17% higher at 39,872.99.

Company News:

British Land expects its rental growth to be between 3-5% in the 2025 financial year, buoyed by high occupancy levels at its properties, even as a persistent drop in building valuations dents its business. The value of its buildings (EPRA net tangible assets) fell 4.4% to 562p as of March 31st.

 

Close Brothers says their managed assets increased to £18.5bn on April 30th, up from £17.7bn in January. Their banking net interest margin decreased to 7.4%, down from 7.5% in H1.

 

Marks & Spencer reported a 58% rise in annual profit, ahead of market expectations, as its strategy to re-shape the business delivered strong sales growth in both its food and clothing divisions.

 

Mitchells & Butlers report that their HY operating profit came in at £164m. Their HY strong trading performance came with like-for-like sales growth of 7%. Cost headwinds are anticipated to total £55m this financial year, slightly less than previously expected.

 

SSE reported a FY24 adjusted pretax profit of £2.17bn and a FY dividend of 60p. They expect their SSEN Transmission operating profit to decline in FY25.

 

Severn Trent reports a FY24 pretax profit of £201.3m, up from £167.9m YoY. They have proposed a final dividend of 70.10p, up from 64.09p YoY as they are “planning record levels of investment in the coming years”.
