Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open +9 points at 7,736.  The UK 100 looks set to open higher this Monday after closing flat on Friday. Wall Street ended the week on the back foot, The S&P fell and notch its second-straight weekly loss, The broad market index lost 0.65% to close at 5,117.09. The Dow Jones dipped 190.89 points, or 0.49%, to finish the session at 38,714.77, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.96% to 15,973.17.   This morning in Asia saw Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 surge 2.7% and the Shanghai Composite and Hang Seng index improved.  Japan’s central bank is tomorrow expected to end eight years of negative interest rates before attention switches to the Federal Reserve and guidance on whether traders are right to expect a first cut in borrowing costs in June.  The Bank of England’s latest no-change decision is set to follow on Thursday, the day after the publication of monthly inflation figures.

Company News:

Chemring says Norway arm wins 66.7m euros of funding from European Commission as they also receive £32m grant funding from Norway government.

 

Currys notes that the offer period ends with no takeover proposal from JD.com or Elliott. They state that sales have been stronger than expected since peak trading period. Their FY adjusted pretax profit is now expected to be at least £115m, up from previous guidance of £105-115m.

 

GSK says positive Ruby phase 3 data shows potential for Jemperli in form of cancer.

 

Marks & Spencer and HSBC are preparing plans to announce a new seven-year deal that includes the creation of a loyalty “Superapp”.

 

Marshalls says their revenues in 2024 will be lower than previously expected and that profit will now be at a similar level to 2023.

 

Sainsbury has been experiencing “technical issues” at some stores meaning it will not be able to fulfil the “vast majority” of online grocery deliveries.

 

Vodafone CFO Luka Mucic buys 2.5m shares at 69.64p for £1.7m on Friday in London.
