The UK 100 called to open +66 points at 7,735. The UK 100 looks set to open higher this morning after softer than expected job numbers this morning, which showed UK unemployment rate has unexpectedly risen to 3.9% in the three months to January, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics, from 3.8% before, where it was expected to remain. Average weekly earnings in the period were up 5.6% on the same period a year ago, down more than expected from the 5.8% a month ago. This may be seen as an encouraging sign for the Bank of England as it seeks to cut interest rates. Stateside yesterday saw The S&P pull back on Monday as the rally that brought the major averages to record highs cooled off. The broad S&P slipped 0.11% to 5,117.94. The Nasdaq slid 0.41% to 16,019.27, as technology stocks struggled. Both saw their second negative sessions in a row. The Dow Jones reversed earlier losses to add 46.97 points, or 0.12%, to finish at 38,769.66.
Dominos Pizza Group report a 2023 pretax profit of £142.3m as they have maintained strong momentum against key strategic priorities in Q1. They state that trading improved in February after a slow January as they are confident of like-for-like sales growth in 2024. They expect their 2024 net debt to be between £250-270m at year end vs £232.8m in 2023. They have agreed to buy Shorecal for 72m euros.
Hill & Smith report a FY pretax profit of £93.2m as they are confident they will make good progress in 2024.
Persimmon reports a 2023 pretax profit of £351.8m, down from £730.7m YoY. They declare a total dividend of 60p per share, unchanged YoY. They state that 2024 will be “another challenging year” but are confident that it will manage the volatility. They state that market conditions are expected to remain subdued throughout the year as their near-term outlook remained “uncertain”.
TP ICAP report a 2023 pretax profit of £96m, down from £113m YoY. They have freed up £100m in cash by end of 2023, ahead of schedule to cut their debt. They state that the first two months trading in 2024 has been good, they are comfortable with market expectations for 2024. They will also launch a new £30m share buyback programme, after completing their previous one.
