The UK 100 called to open -8 points at 7,720. The UK 100 looks set to open slightly lower, this follows on from a somewhat muted session in Asia this morning, the Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo closed down 0.3%. In China, the Shanghai Composite was up 0.5%, while the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong was up 0.2%. US markets will reopen today following the Presidents’ day holiday.
Antofagasta reported a 5% rise in 2023 FY profit as copper production and prices increased, offsetting higher costs. They reported an EBITDA of $3.1bn, up from $2.9bn in 2022.
Barclays reported a 6% fall in annual profit, in line with expectations as they set out a welter of plans including bumper buybacks, an overhaul of its operations, cost cuts and assets sales to improve performance. They will reorganise their business divisions, return £10bn to shareholders between 2024-2026 and restructure their payments business. They reported a pretax profit of £6.6bn, down from £7bn YoY and in line with the £6.7bn average of analysts’ forecasts complied by the bank.
IHG is expected to return more than $1bn to shareholders in 2024, including $800m in share buyback, after reporting better-than-expected annual revenue per room. Their global revenue per available room came in at 16.1% YoY, compared with average analyst expectation of 15.7%.
