Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -16 points at 7,614.   The UK 100 is expected to open lower this morning after the chair of the US Federal Reserve poured cold water on hopes for a cut in interest rates in March as they left interest rates unchanged.  The move comes ahead of the Bank of England’s own interest rate call at midday – it too is expected to leave interest rates unchanged.  On Wall Street, The Dow Jones fell 317.01 points, or 0.82% to close at 38,150.30. The S&P fell 1.61% to 4,845.65. The Nasdaq lost 2.23% to finish the session at 15,164.01.

Company News & Broker Comments:

Company News:

BT Group said they are on track to grow revenue and profit this year after reporting a better-than-expected 3% rise in Q3 revenue and a broadly in-line 1% rise in core earnings. Increased sales of fibre broadband to its Openreach wholesale partners and price rises in its consumer division drove top-line growth in the quarter to end-December.

Glencore reported lower numbers for its 2023 copper, nickel and cobalt production and signalled further falls in nickel and cobalt this year.

GSK reaches a confidential settlement with David Browne, resolving the California Zantac case.

Shell reported a 2023 profit of $28bn, down 30% YoY as oil and gas prices cooled, as they increased their dividend by 4%. Their Q4 net profit reached $7.3bn, with strong LNG trading results offsetting weaker refining and oil trading results. This exceeded analysts’ expectations of a $6bn profit.
