Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -19 points at 7,664.  The UK 100 is expected to open lower as investors await inflation figures in the US on Thursday for further clues as to the pace of interest rate cuts this year.  Stateside yesterday saw the slow start to the year continue, the S&P closed lower by 0.15% to end at 4,756.50. At its lows of the day, the benchmark had dropped 0.7%. The Dow Jones lost 157.85 points, or 0.42%, to close at 37,525.16 after being down by roughly 310 points at the session lows. The Nasdaq recovered from a nearly 0.9% slide and eked out a gain of 0.09%, settling at 14,857.71.

Company News:

Greggs report that their like-for-like sales rose 9.4% in Q4 as they saw high demand for seasonal products such as its festive bake and Christmas lunch baguette. They expect their FY results to be in line with previous expectations.

 

GSK says Nucala has been approved in China to treat severe eosinophilic asthma.

 

Pennon Group are to raise £180m in equity via placing of new shares in accelerated bookbuild. They have also purchased SES Water for £89m from Sumitomo and Osaka Gas.

 

Persimmon state that the housing market conditions would remain challenging in 2024, as broader economic woes continue to fuel affordability concerns. They have built 9,922 new homes in 2023, ahead of its previous forecast of 9,500 houses.

 

Sainsbury’s have kept their profit guidance for the FY after reporting a 7.4% rise in underlying sales for the key Christmas quarter. They expect their FY24 underlying pretax profit to be between £670-700m.

 

Smith & Nephew complete the acquisition of CartiHeal for $180m.
