Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -12 points at 7,389.   The UK 100 is expected to open lower ahead of a hefty batch of corporate earnings, and mixed performances from global markets.  In Asia, markets were mixed after figures showed China slipped back into deflation in October, a blow as policymakers look to revive the world’s second largest economy.  In the US, the Dow edged lower, but the S&P 500 and Nasdaq extended their winning streaks to 8 and 9 respectively, their best runs since 2021, although gains were modest.

Company News & Broker Comments:

Company News:

AstraZeneca has raised their annual core profit outlook, helped by strong demand for its oncology and rare blood disorder drugs. They now expect their core earnings per share to increase by low double-digit to low-teens percentage for the year, compared with an earlier forecast of high single-digit to low double-digit percentage growth.

B&M European Retail SA raised their FY profit guidance as they reported a 16.1% rise in H1 core earnings, saying it has strong trading momentum.

Domino’s Pizza Group says their Q3 2023 total system sales were up 5.5% reflecting the acceleration in new store openings. They have made a good start to Q4 and continue to expect their FY23 underlying EBITDA to be £132-138m.

Flutter Entertainment expects their FY earnings to be at the bottom end of its previously forecast range, as they reported an 8% YoY rise in Q3 revenues. They are going to delist from Euronext Dublin, when they add the New York listing in Q1 2024.

National Grid reports a H1 pretax profit of £1,371m.

Taylor Wimpey has flagged “significant market uncertainty” as affordability woes from high mortgage rates dent demand, but they have forecast their annual operating profit to be at the top end of its previous outlook range of £440-470m, ahead of the market view of £456m.

WH Smith reported a FY profit slightly above analysts’ expectations, helped by an increase in footfall at its stores in transit locations as leisure and business travel rebounded from pandemic lows. They posted a profit before tax of £143m for the year ended Aug 31st, up 96% YoY. Analysts had expected a profit of £142.9m.

Wizz Air narrowed their annual profit forecast, citing ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty and continuing difficult operating conditions. They posted an operating profit of 522.9m euros for the six months to Sept 30th, compared with a loss of 63.8m euros a year earlier.

Wood Group (John) reports Q3 revenue of $1,477m, representing growth of 8%.
