The UK 100 called to open +10 points at 7,337. The UK’s blue-chip index is expected to open brightly once again this morning, despite disappointing economic data in China, after US markets made strong gains. China’s official manufacturing purchasing managers index came in at 49.5 for October, below the 50-point mark that separates contraction from expansion. Elsewhere in Asia, the Bank of Japan started the ball of central bank meetings rolling by deciding to allow yields on the 10-year Japanese government bond to rise above 1%, revising its yield curve controls for the second time in three months. On Wall Street, markets rose sharply, having taken comfort that the crisis in the Middle East had been contained. The Dow Jones surged 1.6%, the S&P jumped 1.2% and the Nasdaq leapt 1.2%.
BP reported Q3 earnings of $3.3bn, missing analysts’ forecasts of $4bn, after a large drop in energy prices from a year ago, as the company extended their $1.5bn share repurchase programme. Their Q3 profit was up on the $2.6bn they reported in Q2, but was down on the $8.15bn they reported last year.
Coca-Cola HBC have maintained their annual profit and sales forecast despite reporting higher quarterly revenue on strong demand for its energy and coffee drinks, as the bottler faces foreign exchange headwinds. They expect an annual impact of 50-60m euros from translational foreign exchange on their operating profit.
IG Group are to cut 10% of its staff (Approximately 300 people) in a restructure as they aim to save £50m per year in cost savings.
