Markets Overview:

The UK 100 called to open -20 points at 7,369.  The UK 100 looks set to take its lead from Asian markets this morning, with a softer opening, despite data this morning that showed the consumer prices index rose by 6.8% in the 12 months to July, down from 7.9% in June, and in line with predictions from the Bank of England and the City consensus.  Yesterday saw the S&P 500 index fell 1.2% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed 1% lower as ratings agency Fitch warned it could downgrade the country’s major banks. Shares in lenders including Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase fell by around 3%.  In Asia, this morning, the Hang Seng index is down by 1.5% and the Shanghai Composite off 0.7%.
