Index Focus - 31 October 2017

Equities are holding their ground this morning with better results from Oil (BP) offsetting disappointment from financials (BNP, Asian peers) as we await the latest from Catalonia (via Brussels), and further developments in the sideshow that is the Trump/Russia investigation. All the while being patient about a UK rate hike on Thursday and who the US President will name as new Fed chair.

The UK 100 is higher thanks to Oil majors (BP results), AZN (drug news), CRDA (Strong Q3, reiterated FY guidance) and ULVR. This offsets the drag from BATS/IMB/DGE (strong GBP vs USD), GLEN/RIO (USD up, copper flat, poor China PMI) and GSK. Germany’s DAX is closed for Reformation day, although futures are positive, outperforming peers.

The UK Index 100 is back from another upside test of 7500, still holding above 7480. The DAX 30 may be closed, but futures ate probing fresh record highs at 13275. The Dow Jones Futures are extending their bounce from 23320 lows. Gold has turned back from $1278, still in a downtrend channel.
