Index Focus - 14 December 2016

Equities are posting mild losses this morning, investors adopting the usual cautious stance ahead of this evening’s Fed policy update, especially after strong rallies of late and indices at or so close to significant highs. Markets are already pricing in a rate hike which means guidance is key. How many rates hikes the Fed pencils in for 2017 is what will be the information that moves sentiment overnight. Lower oil prices and a mixed bag for metals is also hampering risk appetite.

The  UK 100  is hovering around 6950 having eased from yesterday’s highs. The DAX 30 is doing its best to hold above 11250 in a falling channel since late yesterday. Dow Jones Futures are holding their uptrend at 19990, within touching distance of yesterday’s highs and of course the 20,000 mark. Gold has found support at $1161 to preserve a rising channel.
