UK 100 called to open -15pts from Friday’s close, with European bourses having sold off and recovered yesterday (only UK markets closed) in the aftermath of the French and Greek elections which cast a shadow of volatility over markets with calls for growth versus austerity. Results reflected flailing public support for bailouts and cost cuts with France electing for the return of a socialist leader (not seen since Mitterand) rather than re-election of Merkel’s ally and incumbent Sarkozy. Greek polls also rejected current fiscal programmes, proving inconclusive (multiple parties gaining split support, no coalition yet) and look to lead the way for a re-run next month.
US markets closed mixed last night, with little data and UK markets closed, but equities nonetheless focused on European politics. Overnight, Asian markets began a rebound thanks to news that Spain may be ready to helps its ailing bank sector. This is something it said it wouldn’t do but could well be key to avoiding contagion to the rest of Spain’s financial sector and more importantly to the rest of the continent’s. Macro data overnight saw a raft of poor UK focused macro data in the form of housing, shop prices and employment confidence.
Today look to be a quiet macro today for the return of UK equity traders and their chance to react to the weekend political events, however German Industrial production will likely been keenly watched after the recent poor PMI manufacturing data. US optimism and jobs data also likely of interest after the disappointing US jobs number on Friday.
