Royal Mail (RMG.L) – Operator almost doubled its operating profit in the first half of the year. Operating profit after transformation costs had jumped to £283m. That figure 96.5% ahead of the £144m posted a year ago, helped also by a one-off VAT credit of £35m and lower than expected transformation costs in the half. The group said it intended to propose a final dividend of £133m for the FY. Closing Price 533.94p (Reuters)

Telford Homes (TEF.L) – H1 profit before tax increased to £7.7m up from £6.5m in 2012. Board is very confident of the prospects and growth potential over the next few years. Closing Price 375.00p (Reuters)

United Utilities (UU.L) – Underlying operating profit up £29m to £343m, benefiting from tight cost control. Interim dividend of 12.01p per share, in line with policy. On track to invest at least £800m this year in there network. Closing Price 659.59p (Reuters)

Compass Group (CPG.L) – Launched a £500m share buyback on Wednesday, its third in as many years. Reported underlying pre-tax profit up 9% to £1.2bn in 2013. Revenue in 2013 rose 4.3% to £17.6bn. Compass also increased its dividend by 12.7% on a year earlier to 24p. Closing Price 930.21p (Reuters)

Amec (AMEC.L) – Is eyeing a takeover of U.S.-listed engineering company Foster Wheeler AG (FWLT.O) in a potential deal that could create a £5bn energy services group, The Times reported on Wednesday. Closing Price 1170.00p (Reuters)

Punch Taverns (PUB.L) – Q1 L-f-L net income in the core estate up 1.4%. Expectations remain unchanged. Core estate to return to FY L-f-L net income growth of up to1% for the current financial year. To announce restructuring proposal in December 2013 with formal launch of implementation shortly thereafter.  Closing Price 11.00p (Reuters)
