Glencore Xstrata (GLEN.L) – wrote down the value of assets inherited from miner Xstrata by $7.7bn, as it announced a 9% drop in core profit in the first set of full results since the commodities group was created. H1 adjusted core profit – EBITDA – totalled $6bn, at the higher end of analyst estimates, compared to a pro forma $6.6bn a year ago. Closing Price 301.95p (Reuters)

John Wood Group (WG.L) – produced H1 core profit growth of 18.6% on Tuesday and said it would deliver a full year performance in line with expectations. Earnings before interest tax and amortisation was $243.2m, up from $205.1m a year earlier, driven by a strong performance in its engineering division. Closing Price 903.00p (Reuters)

BHP Billiton (BLT.L) – Missed forecasts with a 15% fall in second-half profit. Attributable profit excluding one-offs fell to $6.12bn for the six months to June from $7.18bn a year ago. The result was well below analysts’ forecasts at $7.16bn. Closing Price 1956.00p (Reuters)
