UK 100 Index Focus – 31 Jul

Major Support & Resistance (pivot points – explained):

Pivot: 6576; Support: 6551, 6524, 6498; Resistance: 6604, 6629, 6657

The narrow range has narrowed yet further. While the over-riding 1-week pattern is of a bearish descending triangle (falling highs, flat base) signalling potential for a correction, however, there are some rising lows from the last few days. Unfortunately rising lows and falling highs result in a converging pattern which is normally a continuation of the entry trend – in our case sideways, which is the dominant move on the 1-month chart. Is August set to be mirror July?

Markets back in wait-and-see mode ahead of the US Fed’s FOMC update this evening on the future of the most important central bank stimulus in the world – QE3. Is it soon to be reduced? or no change to the expectations-managing and flexibility-retaining statement “taper if the data keep improving, but we are watching lots of data and there are lots of variables“. Could the update result in an index break higher or lower? Or will the BoE or ECB steal the policy thunder?
