UK 100 called to open lower by around 25 points this morning, taking a pause for breath after strong gains we have seen already this week. As mentioned yesterday, Alcoa’s figures helped pushed the Dow Jones higher.
In the US, the Dow Jones rallied 75 points to 15,300 which is around a three-week high. The S&P added 11 points at 1652 which left it within 17 points of its all-time high.
Despite the upbeat sentiment in US markets, Asian markets were a little more mixed with the surprise news of a slowdown in activity in China. Chinese Trade Balance figures as well as Import/Export numbers were worse than expectations. Hang Seng futures were recently up 121 points at 20,804 whilst in Japan, the Nikkei was down 154 points at 14,318.
In focus today will be trading statements from Burberry, Barrat Developments, ICAP, JD Wetherspoon and Halfords, will Burberry continue to shine? Macro-data wise, keep an eye on US data due at 3/3:30pm (Wholesale Inventories, Crude Oil Inventories). At 7pm this evening, all eyes will be on the minutes released by the Fed as well as Ben Bernanke speaking on Policy at 9:10pm.
UK 100 pauses for breath and currently hovering around the 6500 level. Still on an uptrend on a weekly/monthly basis however week highs of 6530 become resistance to the upside. Support at 6478 and 6400 remain intact.
In FX, I doubt there’ll be much movement in the US $ today until we hear the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) latest monetary policy meeting. Because of this, we’ve seen little change in the major currency pairs; £ vs $ trading at 1.489, £ vs € is trading at 1.164 and € vs $ is trading at 1.279
In Commodities, Crude oil rallied to a fourteen-month high on Tuesday as political tensions in Egypt continued to fuel concern about possible oil supply disruptions in the region, currently trading at $104.4 a barrel. The last time it traded around these levels was April last year. Gold trading sideways at $1248.
