Markets Overview: (Source: Bloomberg, FT, Reuters, DJ Newswires)

UK 100 called to open down 10 points at 6712, as traders enjoying an extended Christmas break mean we’re likely to see thin volumes today as we did yesterday. The UK 100 celebrates its 30th birthday today having switched from the “FT30” back in 1984. Only 19 of the original 30 companies have remained in the index for the entire three-decade period – including oil giant BP, retailer Marks & Spencer and insurer Prudential.

The Dow Jones closed down 135 points at 16,441, marking its first negative start to a New Year since 2008. The S&P was down 16 points at 1,831. It’s not all doom and gloom however as the Dow Jones recorded its best annual performance in over 16 years!

In Asia, the Nikkei was still closed for the New Year holiday whilst the Hang Seng followed the US markets, closing down 494 points at 22,846.

In focus today we have results from high street retailer Next. Results came in better than expected (upping profit forecasts for 2014) which comes as a relief after the profit warning we saw from Debenhams last week. Macro-data wise, keep an eye on Net Consumer Credit and Mortgage Approvals from the UK at 09:30 this morning. The Fed’s Ben Bernanke is also speaking at 7:30pm this evening.

Gold headed for the biggest weekly gain since October on speculation that demand will increase in Asia, the largest consuming region. Spot gold is currently up $10 $1235.

Crude Oil traded near the lowest level in a month amid speculation that the Federal Reserve will further curb stimulus measures after signs of improvement in the U.S. economy. Crude Oil currently trading $95.41 a barrel whilst Brent Crude trades higher at $107.70.
